Native American Women were largely overlooked in history. We do know that Cherokee Women had important influence in the daily life of their tribe. Women in Cherokee society held a great deal of power because they were not treated as inferior to men. The Cherokee were a matrilineal tribe, meaning the daughters could inherit from their mothers. Cherokee women were the landowners and in charge of farming and family. They raised the children with the help of their brothers. Cherokee women and their husbands lead fairly separate lives. The women spoke in council meetings and conducted diplomatic negotiations. Today Cherokee women can now be chiefs. Modern Cherokee people still trace clan relationships through their mothers.
